Creative Coding with MIT Scratch

It is a year-long weekly coding programmes designed to inspire kids to create purposefully with technology. We introduce core computational thinking through the block-based programming Scratch. Students will build simple games and animations and establish important coding concepts.

  • Project Based Learning to build a core and important coding concepts through active exploration of real-world problems.

  • Deep dive into programming animations with Scratch as a component of game design and development

  • Apply logic and creativity to coded animation and games

Target Age Group: 7-10 (Grade 2-4)

Pre-requisite: No (For beginner)

Medium of Instruction: 

  • Course Material: English

  • Class discussion: Mainly English (supplemented with Cantonese ONLY when needed)

Education Tools: Scratch 3.0 Programming Platform developed by MIT.

Module 1:

Scratch Programming For Beginner

Students will use Scratch, a block-based programming tool developed by MIT to learn basic computer programming concepts such as loops, and if-then-else, functions by building different animations, stories, and games.

Extending into Games

Students will build more advanced games and animations for more in-depth concepts.

  • Develop confidence and strengthen core coding concepts

  • Deep dive into programming animations with Scratch as a component of game design and development

  • Exposure to the nature of gameplay and design

Module 3:

Artificial Intelligence with Scratch

AI is becoming ever more important in a growing number of fields, professions and industries. For example, it supports diagnostics in the medical field and the use of robots for strenuous tasks in industrial applications. In this module, students will exposure to a number of A.I. applications on Scratch. They will be able to understand how A.I. can be applied to real life applications.

Requirements:

  • Bring your own laptop with charger and pre-installed Google Chrome browser. (Limited computer laptops are available)

  • Students have to practice typing before class.

  • All scratch project codes will be stored on the internet. Continue the learning at home!

  • Certificate of attendance

Note:

  • ​Maximum 3 make up classes per term.

  • Make up classes must be before the start of next term.​
